BJP asks AAP to quit key posts
NEW DELHI: Sharpening its attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), BJP alleged on Wednesday that some of its MLAs continue to occupy key government posts and use official cars despite AAP's resignation from the government. BJP said the party which gives lessons in political morality and had promised that its MLAs will not avail facilities given to legislators should make its members resign from all posts. The move is seen as an attempt by BJP to put its own people in key government positions.
"They had promised that they would not avail the facilities given to legislators. But today, their MLAs are heading most of the district development committees and are using official vehicles. Can AAP, which believes in lecturing others on political morality, explain why it is letting its members do this," asked Satish Upadhyay, Delhi BJP president. He also questioned the work done by AAP MLAs through these committees. "Has AAP done any work audit of these committees? They should give an account of the work done by their MLAs who head these committees,'' said Upadhyay.
Of the 11 district development committees, nine are headed by AAP MLAs. BJP leaders alleged that most of their MLAs are using office facilities, telephone and car. "Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh uses the official car. He is head of the west Delhi committee,'' said Rajiv Babbar, spokesperson of Delhi BJP.
The BJP was primarily accusing AAP of running a government from the backdoor. "Kejriwal blames the LG for the slow pace of development in the city. But it is the district development committees which take decisions about such work and nine out of 11 are headed by their MLAs," said Upadhyay.
The party also attacked Congress, which was decimated in Delhi in both assembly and Lok Sabha elections, for continuing to hold key posts in various committees. Some of the government's committees which are directly connected with public welfare like DTDC, Delhi Minority Commission, APMC, Delhi Commission for Women, Delhi Commission for Child, SC/ST Committee, OBC Commission, Waqf Board and Tirth Yatra Vikas Committee among others have Congress leaders as chairman. All these appointments were made by the then chief minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit.
Senior BJP leader Sahib Singh Chauhan alleged that one Congress leaders even has a house in NDMC's Kaka Nagar area.
BJP sources claim there are close to a hundred such committees of which 98% are headed by either AAP or Congress leaders. After replacing four Congress-appointed members in New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the BJP is now trying to place its own people in key posts. While the possibility of government formation in Delhi is now bleak, the party can carry out some welfare work through these committees.
"BJP has no right to lecture us on morality. It is trying to raise these frivolous issues to hide its shame over being caught red-handed bribing our MLA," said Ashutosh, AAP's national spokesperson. He said there is nothing wrong in MLAs holding on to positions they were appointed to according to constitutional provisions.
